A Map-Reading Tip

by Terry Burnes

Over 45? Got glasses? It's been getting harder to read that map in your tank bag hasn't it? It's called presbyopia, we all get it, and glasses are the only solution. Do yourself a big favor and go to an optometrist and get a prescription for some Varilux or similar sunglasses. These are "invisible" bifocals or trifocals (no lines in the lenses to make you look as old as you are, and a smoother transition from unassisted to assisted vision.) I don't like them much for reading, but they're a godsend for riding, allowing me to once again quickly read my map and then get my eyes back on the road.

The hot setup seems to be from Bollé, which makes a modular system consisting of frames, interchangeable outer wraparound lenses (gray, amber, clear, etc.) and a set of inner, removable prescription lenses. This system allows you to switch outer lenses for different riding conditions (clear lenses are great for riding at night or in low light conditions with your visor up) and to ride with your "map reading" glasses when needed (at night too) and without them when not.)

The other advantages of the Bollé setup: the wraparound style of sunglasses is best for "wind management" around the eyes; the separate inner lenses allow you to upgrade magnification as your eyes deteriorate, which they will, without replacing everything else; and you can replace a scratched lens rather than buy a whole new pair of glasses.

If you have vision insurance, it will probably cover at least part of the cost of these glasses. This is a safety issue. Don't put it off!
