Death Valley Weather

Tour Captain Ross's 2/11 Update:

It looks like Death Valley will be perfect. The weather is cooperating, rain until Thursday noon on the Peninsula and possibly a little in Bakersfield on Friday, other than that, perfect. Be prepared to ride in rain, just in case. Please be ready promptly at Cal. BMW in Mountainview by 10am on Friday with a full tank of gas and an empty bladder. I’ll be distributing directions, but you should also bring a map of your own.

We’ll be stopping for lunch in Coalinga. It’ll be a late lunch so you might want to snack before we leave. Make sure you mention our club name for hotel reservations in Bakersfield for the discount. There is a KOA if you want to camp instead.

We’ll be stopping for lunch together on Friday and Saturday, dinner on Friday will be in Bakersfield. Breakfast Saturday morning can be either at the hotel or at Denny’s. We’re leaving Saturday at 8:30 from Denny’s.

If anybody needs my cell phone number, send me an email. - Ross

February’s meeting will take place Sunday, February 16th at 9am over President’s Weekend in Death Valley. We have reservations in the Furnace Creek Campground mixed sections with the Central Cal. BMW Club. Reservations are for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, leaving Monday morning.

The unofficial tour will leave from California BMW/Triumph in Mountain View at 10:00 AM on Friday, the 14th. From there we will head south on 101 to 25, around Hollister continuing on 25 south. We’ll take 198 east into Coalinga for a late lunch. From there, 33 south and into Bakersfield for the night. Originally I thought we would only go as far as the Visalia area, but I think Bakersfield will be a better ride. Everyone is on their own for sleeping arrangements in Bakersfield, however; Pat said that she would buy the first round after dinner.

The Saturday tour will start at 8:30 from Denny’s at 2627 Buck Owens Blvd. in Bakersfield. From there we’ll head east on 178, passing Lake Isabella and into Ridgecrest. Heading north on 178 we’ll need to decide whether to take Trona Wildrose or Panamint Valley rd. Then to 190 into Furnace Creek. I hope to be there around noon.

Both days’ rides will include some great roads and fantastic scenery. There is plenty to see and do in Death Valley and don’t forget the Airhead BMW club will be there.

New riders and new to the club riders are always welcome! Please contact me with any questions. The normal way things go is we meet for breakfast an hour before departure and then we start each ride with a meeting to go over some essential rules of the road and distribute maps. We review how to ride on highways, single lane roads and keeping an eye on the person behind you. While we might get spread out after a while, it is important to wait for the person behind you when we are at a stop sign or light. Our goal is to have fun and be safe.

Please contact the Tour Captain, Ross Felling at rsfelling@yahoo.com with any questions.
